For a richer flavour, use thick-cut brioche or challah bread. Serve with a variety of toppings like fresh fruits, maple syrup, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Shallow dish
  • Frying pan or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Plate

Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick-cut bread (brioche or white bread)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 120 ml milk
  • 60 ml double cream (heavy cream)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar (or any sugar)
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch salt
  • Butter, for frying
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, fresh berries, icing sugar

Instructions

Prep in Advance

  • Wash your hands.
  • Slice your bread up into thick slices
  • Gather all necessary equipment and ingredients.
  • Crack the 2 large eggs into the mixing bowl and whisk until smooth.
  • Add the 120 ml milk
  • Add the 60 ml double cream (heavy cream) and 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Add the 1 tbsp caster sugar (or any sugar) and ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Add the Pinch salt to the eggs. Whisk until well combined.

Let’s Cook!

    • Pour the egg mixture into a shallow dish or plate (so you can soak a slice of bread in it)
    • Place a frying pan or griddle on medium heat.
    • Add a small amount of butter to the pan and let it melt.
    • Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, and flip it over to make sure both sides are well coated. Let excess drip off.
    • Place the bread on the hot pan and cook for 2.5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
    • Repeat with the remaining slices of bread, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
    • Serve the French toast warm with your choice of toppings. Maple syrup and berries go very well! A sprinkle of icing sugar also makes it look good and taste even better.
