The UpCooked BigWhop Burger

The UpCooked BigWhop Burger

We challenged each other to combine a Big Mac with a Burger King Whopper. (A while back we obtained a recipe to recreate Big Mac's at home, and they were pretty close to the real thing. We've adapted that with what makes a Whopper great, to create our "BigWhop")

Equipment

  • Grill, griddle or stovetop pan
  • Knife and chopping board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowl

Ingredients

For the burger:

  • 600 g ground beef
  • 4 soft sesame seed buns
  • 8 slices of American cheese (or 'burger cheese')
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the special sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp finely minced white onion
  • 1 tbsp finely minced dill pickle
  • 1 tbsp sweet relish (any similar sweet sauce will do, e.g. sweet chilli sauce)
  • 2 tbsp french dressing or vinaigrette

Toppings

  • 1/2 Iceberg lettuce
  • 1 White onion
  • 2 Dill pickles
  • 1 Tomato

Optional

  • 700 g french fries (or, as many as you want to cook up and eat!)

Instructions

Prep in Advance:

  • Wash your hands
  • Grab a chopping board for the ground beef
  • Separate 600 g ground beef into equal balls so there is enough for two patties per person (if you are making for 4 people, there should be 8 balls)
  • Squish the balls down and form them into 8 thin patties using your hands. Definitely go for thin! They often shrink as you cook them, so, big flat discs is what you want
  • Wash your hands
  • Season them with salt and pepper
  • Slice 1 White onion into thin rings
  • Take 2 or 3 of the rings and mince/finely chop them
  • Finely chop/mince your dill pickles so that you have about 1 tbsp finely minced dill pickle. Don't stress if you're over or under!
  • For the special BigWhop sauce, mix 1/4 cup mayonnaise in a medium mixing bowl
  • Add in 2 tbsp ketchup
  • Add the minced onion (not the rings!)
  • Add the finely chopped/minced dill pickle
  • Add the sweet relish (or sweet chilli sauce) and 2 tbsp french dressing or vinaigrette
  • Chill in the fridge until ready to use
  • Thinly slice 1 Tomato and set aside
  • Wash, dry, and shred 1/2 Iceberg lettuce and set aside
  • Get someone to set the table (with ketchup!)

Let's Cook!

  • Preheat your oven to cook 700 g french fries according to the package instructions. Don't forget to set a timer/alarm!
  • Preheat your grill/griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat
  • Add a small amount of oil if you're cooking in a pan (1-2 tbsp)
  • Cook the beef patties for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked. Add a slice of cheese to each patty in the last minute of cooking to melt. At this point, don't flip it over!
  • Cut your buns in half and toast the inside of all buns on the grill until lightly golden. This is optional of course, but does add some flavour
  • Begin assembling your burgers. Start by spreading the sauce you made on the inside of the bottom bun. Add enough to cover the bun, but not too much to make it sickly as you'll be adding a bit more later!
  • Add lettuce, then a beef patty with the cheese, and then some raw onion on top
  • Then layer again with more sauce, lettuce, tomato, another beef patty, and more onion and sliced dill pickle
  • Cap with the top bun and serve up on a plate with a portion of fries. Bow.
